A L I E N (1979) - Ridley Scott

“Yes. I read you. The answer is negative.”

Hard to pick between Alien and Aliens, but I figured I’d stick with the film that started it all. While Aliens is a masterful blend of action and horror, Alien is a more traditional thriller. It’s slow and takes its time to build, which leads to some truly nail-biting sequences. The use of shadows and silence are really unmatched and it does horror-sci-fi in a way that never feels bogged down in explanations or exposition.

But really, the reason Alien is such an excellent film is because of Ripley. I still think the industry struggles to write actual cool, kick-ass women in ways that don’t make them seem forced, or cruel, or bitchy, or annoying. We need more Ripleys in media today–she was smart and capable, and above all, she was right. They never should have let that thing on the ship.
